Once the solemn ceremony is over, the fun begins with an outdoor reception. The XLR-K2M XLR Adaptor and ECM-XM1 microphone that were used in the preceding example become the primary recording tools for this phase of the day's festivities. The guests will now be milling around talking among themselves, and there might even be a few planned or impromptu speeches. The camera-mounted microphone will let you quickly move to the optimum shooting position as events unfold, and the shotgun pickup pattern of the ECM-XM1 microphone will make it easy to clearly isolate speeches and other sounds of interest.

Compact Shotgun Design
Shotgun microphones that have a narrow pickup pattern designed to isolate subjects in noisy surroundings tend to be physically long, and are therefore often used handheld or on a boom. The ECM-XM1 supplied with the XLR-K2M kit, however, offers a narrow pickup pattern in a short, compact unit that can be conveniently camera mounted along with the XLR-K2M.
